The stock lower arms stay, but the spring pocket needs preparation. These ShockWaves use the supplied trunnion mounts in the original arms. Mock up the bellows before connecting air lines so the pocket edge cannot become a very expensive hole punch.
Fitment
- 1970-1981 Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird with original lower control arms.
- A separate air supply and control system is required. A Camaro subframe installed in another vehicle needs its own clearance check; it is not an additional vehicle application.
- Manufacturer-listed models: 1970-1981 Chevrolet Camaro; 1970-1981 Pontiac Firebird.
Specifications
- Part 11172401; front HQ single-adjustable ShockWave pair with 6.5-inch double-convoluted air springs and 2.75-inch upper stud mounts.
- The current exact manual gives an 11.75-inch design ride-height reference. Published stroke/compressed/extended dimensions differ between the product page and the newer manual; confirm the actual shock dimensions before custom mounting work.
- Air ports are 1/8-inch NPT; fittings are not included.
Included
- Two HQ shocks and air springs, four universal trunnion pieces and locking rings, upper Delrin mounting pieces, and the listed mounting bolts, washers and nuts.
Before ordering and installation
- Use the exact stock-arm installation procedure: enlarge the upper hole to 3/4 inch, remove the spring-retainer fingers and provide the specified outside frame-pocket clearance.
- Install the trunnion and upper Delrin mounts as shown; check full suspension travel for rubbing, rather than checking only the parked car.
- Keep air lines and bellows clear of exhaust heat and moving parts. Do not drive fully deflated or use excess pressure to compensate for an incorrect installation.
- Do not disturb the factory air-spring locking ring or remove the press-in fitting. Start with the exact manual's 12-click rebound baseline and tune the complete car.
