Read the axle location before choosing a color. Wilwood 140-10790-BK is the black-powder-coated, four-piston D8-4 rear replacement-caliper kit for the listed 1965-82 Corvettes. It works around the original rear rotor and bracket arrangement rather than supplying a new rotor package.
What is in the box
- Left/right D8-4 rear replacement calipers in Black Powder Coat; forged billet-aluminum bodies with stainless-steel pistons and high-temperature seals.
- One axle set of D8 brake pads and the included stainless braided 220-10632 line kit.
- Stock rotors, hubs and vehicle mounting brackets are retained and are not included.
- DS651 lists four 7/16-20 x 1.50-inch mounting bolts and eight washers with the rear kit. Do not substitute the front kit’s hardware instructions.
Match it to the car
Manufacturer stock applications are Chevrolet Corvette C2, 1965-67, and C3, 1968 and 1969-82. Confirm the original rear mounting arrangement and serviceable stock rotors. This is a caliper replacement, not a universal axle or spindle conversion. Ridetech hub/pin-spindle rear conversions are not verified by these OE rear instructions and are not established applications for this listing. The manufacturer’s 0.00 OEM axle-offset field does not establish an axle-swap measurement.
Before the wrench comes out
- Compare the wheel-clearance diagram with the actual wheel before ordering. Wilwood says the kit may fit 15-inch wheels; diameter alone is not a fit check. Its page identifies 1965-66 OE “JK” steel wheels and some replica alloys as needing a 3/16-inch or wider spacer. Any required spacer is separate; confirm stud engagement and wheel geometry.
- Follow DS651 for the rear mounting bolts, washers and its specified 55 foot-pound torque with red Loctite 271. Verify the rear wheel against that manual’s template; a different kit’s clearance dimensions are not substituted here.
- The current exact product page names ProMatrix pads, while the shared installation sheet lists BP-10. A D8 pad set is included, but the supplied compound needs confirmation before ordering; this listing does not promise one of the conflicting compounds.
- The original rubber hoses do not adapt to these calipers. Use the included braided line kit with the correct adapters for the caliper’s 1/8-27 NPT inlet, and follow the manual’s sealing and routing instructions. Check hose retention and clearance through full suspension travel and steering movement where applicable.
- Have an experienced brake installer inspect the existing rotors, brackets and hardware, assess the master cylinder and front/rear brake balance, then bleed, leak-test, bed the pads and follow the manual’s minimum test procedure before road use.
