Setting Up a Home Garage for Classic Truck Work: The Essentials

You do not need a 3,000 square foot shop to wrench on your truck. Plenty of builds have happened in single-car garages and driveways. But the right setup makes everything faster, safer, and a lot less frustrating. Here is how to set up a home garage that actually works.
Lighting First, Everything Else Second
The single biggest upgrade you can make to a garage is lighting. Replace that single bulb with 4-foot LED shop lights. Mount them every 4 feet across the ceiling. Good lighting is the difference between finding a dropped bolt in 10 seconds and spending 20 minutes on your hands and knees. Budget about $150 for enough LEDs to light a two-car garage properly.
A Decent Floor Jack and Jack Stands
A 3-ton floor jack handles anything you will throw at it with a classic truck. Get a low-profile model if your truck is lowered. Jack stands are non-negotiable. Buy 4 so you can have the whole truck in the air at once. Never work under a truck on just a jack. Pittsburgh from Harbor Freight works fine. Snap-On is nice but not necessary for home use.
Air Tools vs Electric
Cordless impact wrenches have gotten so good that most home mechanics do not need a compressor anymore. A Milwaukee M18 or DeWalt 20V impact wrench handles lug nuts, suspension bolts, and exhaust work without dragging a hose around. Save the compressor money for tools you will actually use more often.
Workbench and Organization
A solid workbench does not have to be expensive. Two by fours and a sheet of 3/4 inch plywood makes a bench that will outlast most store-bought ones. Mount a vise on the end. Hang pegboard behind it for frequently used tools. Label your parts bags during disassembly. Future you will be grateful when you are reassembling at 11pm on a Sunday.
The Non-Negotiables
Fire extinguisher. Eye protection. A fan for ventilation when using chemicals. A good creeper so your back survives the project. And a mini fridge for cold drinks because every real garage has one. The truck build is a marathon, not a sprint. Make the space comfortable and you will spend more time in it.
